Observing cetaceans at the Vicentina coast
Step aboard and discover the marine wildlife at the Vicentina coast, from cetacean to seabirds, pelagic fish or even sea turtles!
Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises) are the only marine mammals that live all their lives in the aquatic environment. On our coast several species occur all year round, some regularly and others seasonally or occasionally.
Although we cannot guarantee we achieve a high success rate in our search for dolphins. As marine biologists we try to give you an insight into the amazing life of these marine mammals and the environment that surrounds them. Our trips do not have a previously defined route. The itinerary mainly depends on weather conditions and last known animal's location.
The species we encounter more often are the Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis), the Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and Risso's Dolphin (Grampus griseus). Occasionally we encounter other wild visitors such as the Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), Killer Whale (Orcinus orca), or Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeroleoalba).
In our search for dolphins we are often visited and accompanied by several bird species. We frequently watch Northern Gannets, Cory's Shearwaters, and European Storm Petrels amongst others. Another part of the adventure is a possible encounter with Blue Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks, Sun Fish or Sea Turtles.
