Observing dolphins and marine wildlife near Ria Formosa
The coastal area of Algarve, for its food availability, is considered home of many marine species. Leaving the calm waters of the Ria Formosa natural park we get 10 to 12 miles off shore. We go along the coast line of the Algarve, passing by the barrier islands of Ria Formosa and the most southern location of Portugal, Cabo de Santa Maria.
The local biodiversity will surprise you. We may see several species of cetaceans, the most sighted being the Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Seabirds are a constant presence and the most seen species are the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus) and several species of Storm-petrels. Seagulls are obviously a common sighting especcially when we pass by fishing boats. During this tour there is also the possibility of observing other marine wildlife species such as sea turtles, the Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola), sharks and occasionally other cetaceans species as the Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and the Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata).
By choosing this tour you are also contributing to the gaining of knowledge by better monitoring of national waters since we actively participate in conservation projects with these themes. You will be guided and accompanied by an officially certified nature guide for the Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Institute (ICNB). Our team consists of biologists with specific training in observation of cetaceans and marine life.
Nature can be unpredictable and we are trying to encounter dolphins in their natural habitat. It cannot be guaranteed that they will be seen at all trips.
Our 12 seater RIB is very comfortable and safe. Sea conditions are mostly calm, especcially during the summer season, but subject to these conditions the tour can be done all year round.
